Clay Experiments

clay visioning workshop

During summer 2025, Ceramic Futures began through a collaboration with InterAlia in Athens, where we tested clay-based visioning methods in a hands-on workshop titled Shaping the Future with Clay. Drawing from futures literacy and storytelling practices, the workshop explored how tactile making can support individual, collaborative, and collective imagining of distant spatial futures. The experience became a foundational moment for the project, revealing both the potential and challenges of using clay as a medium for speculative, participatory research.

In September 2025, Ceramic Futures hosted Shaping Athens with Clay, a second experimental workshop in collaboration with InterAlia and the College Year in Athens (CYA) program. Participants explored the neighbourhood of Exarcheia through tactile documentation, using clay to capture textures and material traces of the city framed by a set of “Athenian contradictions.” The workshop tested clay as a tool for urban exploration and critical reflection, revealing how hands-on material engagement can function as an accessible method for spatial research and learning.

archive vessels

This first personal clay experiment explores how everyday movement through the city can be translated into ceramic form. Using a familiar walking route between home and the pottery studio, found materials and stories are collected and used to transform a series of repeated vessels through drawing, texturing, imprinting, assembling, and deforming. The experiment investigates clay as a narrative medium, turning habitual making and mundane urban traces into a form of material documentation and speculative inquiry.
